Jesus Of Nazareth' remains one of the most controversial made for TV films in history. When the director Franco Zeffirelli publicly announced his intention to depict Jesus Christ as human instead of as a religious icon, the film found itself subject to scrutiny and debate. Religious activists vehemently protested 'Jesus Of Nazareth' even before the series aired on April 3, 1977. Although many sponsors balked from their support, NBC decided to air their expensive epic as scheduled. The result was a ratings coup for the network, and to this day 'Jesus Of Nazareth' is included among the most successful 'Mini-Series' of all time.
'Jesus Of Nazareth' originally aired in two 3-hour segments that telecast on Palm Sunday and Easter Monday. NBC billed it as part of their 'Big Event Anthology'. Critics celebrated Zeffirelli's depiction of Jesus. They believed he created one of the most reverently accurate portrayals of Christ ever seen on film.

This Has Been Burning A Hole On My Shelf For Months...It Needs No Real Introduction...I Remember Watching This As A Ten Year Old In The Late Seventies And It Touched Something In Me...I Am Not Religious...More Of A 'Don't Know And Don't Really Wanna Know'...But Zeffirelli's Epic Makes The Story So Believable At Times It Is As Though You Are Actually Witnessing Footage Of Christ...Robert Powell As Jesus Is Just Pure Magic On Screen...A True Masterpiece.
